Santa Martha Hospital
By Mario E. Zugasti
I no longer live in LA but it makes me sad that the Hospital where I was born, Santa Marta Hospital no longer exists. I have fond memories growing up in Boyle Heights/East L.A. attending Lorena Elementary and checking out books from Stevenson Library. (That is all)
I was also born their and also worked there my oldest sister belonged to the daughters of saint Joseph who owed the hospital so sad to see it gone
Thanks for your comment, Gabriel, and sharing your personal memory of the hospital.
Thanks for sharing your memories of growing up in Boyle Heights/East L.A., Mario. We hope seeing our film will inspire more fond memories for you.
Anyone have stories or pictures of Santa Martha Hospital? I’m doing research.
I was born there on January 18th 1990 sad to know its closed
I have many memories as CEO of a grat hospital, a local treasure,
Thanks for sharing, Harry! You were the CEO? That’s wonderful.
I too was born there, September 2, 1975, but I was raised in Santa Monica, my childhood friend was born there too on November 24, 1975, our moms had doctor appointments together, she lived closer to the hospital then me. But I loved the fact that I was born in East LA in a unique hospital with my childhood friend whose now my comadre. And I grew up in SM, being different then the other kids in that sense. I wish I could visit the hospital today
Me n my 2 brothers were born at General Hospital but my youngest sister was born there September 6 1973. Great memories driving by and always telling her “llook that’s where you were born.”?♥️ My husband and I recently drove by , n even got off too walk around the building. We love ELA♥️
I was born there on September 23, 1981.
I was also born there on January 18th 1990 and my mother told me that it was a very nice hospital and that they were nuns there made her feel special
Trying to find a list of obstetricians who were the in 1971. Would like to know of the doctor who delivered me is still practicing. Can’t read his name on my birth certificate.
My sons were both born there, as well. January 17, 1981 and June 9, 1984… the nuns were very kind and prayed with me and gave the prayer Footprints on a card. I was very happy to have had my children there. The doctor that delivered them was Dr Nguyen.
My brother and I were born there in 88′ and 89′. Our doctor was across the street, Dr. Goody. I remember the day it snowed in East Los Angeles, not much but enough to grab and throw a snowball or two in back of the hospital on Humphreys. I do miss seeing the nuns in a hospital, seems so rare now.
I was born at Santa Martha hospital on Sept.16,1973. My white birth certificate has my foot prints on the back.
East Los will always be Home…I was born at Santa Maria Hospital in 1973…They took care of me and we’re a blessing in my family’s life…all who worked there were Angels. Love is given back…Always in my heart…
I was born there Sep. 10, 1990
Where was it located? I can’t find anything about this hospital until now.
december 1976… we need some pictures!
I was born there in 1985. Babies of Santa Marta, unite!
I was born at Santa Marta in 74. I tried finding the doctor that delivered me too but have not had any luck. I was there often because I had surgery as a kid. I wonder where all the medical records are now?
I was born at Santa Marta Hospital in November of 1952. My mother was raised Catholic and wanted me to be born in a religious facility. We lived in Montebello at the time and I remember my dad saying that I was a very expensive birth. .
I still have the customary birth certificate with the statistics of height, weight, time of birth and of course, 2 little foot prints.
It’s a shame that you can never visit the place that brought you into this world…I guess it’s true that you can never go home again…
I was born in 1963. For many years I’d wonder where the city of Belvedere was located, since it was on my birth certificate. Mother would say you were born in Los Angeles, where nuns were the nurses.
I was operated there and I am looking for medical records?
Born there 01/09/1971
My Brother Jose Fabian Carrizoza was the first baby to be born in Santa Marta Hospital on January 11, 1972.
I was born there September 7, 1956, never heard of Belvedere till I had to get a birth certificate from the county I was born in, I to have the Santa Marta certificate with my footprints on it, wish I could take a walk inside the hospital I was born in 66 years ago.

I was born on 1974 at Santa Marta Hospital and Clinic. Delivered by Leroy A. Reese M.D. Have no memories but mom says she loved the nurses.
I was delivered by the Nuns in Santa Martha Hospital in May of 1968 as well as my brother in June of 1969.
Belvedere/Boyle Heights/East LA
I was born at Santa Marta Hospital in 1955, as well as two of my siblings. Mi mama named me Marta. We saw our GP, Dr. Villarreal at the hospital for years. My understanding is that it stated in the 1940’s as a hospital for single mother’s. They had very few beds and expanded as the population grew. I have such wonderful memories of Our Lady of Lourdes, Catholic Church that was some how associated with the hospital.
Hello I was born in Santa Marta in 1989 my mom told me that my birth was complicated and they had to do a c section the Dr took too long . But I didnt have any idea that this hospital no longer exists although my mom remembers the nun that carried me and said I was a beautiful baby girl . My mom was afraid they were going to keep me lol
Hello, I did not know that Santa Marta Hospital was closed. Two of my boys were born there in 1991 and 1993, I still have the actual hospital certificate for both.
I too was saddened to find out the hospital I was born in 1982 no longer exists. My mother took me to have my ears pierced there as well as the story was told to me . I was only a couple months old but the nuns pierced my ears. I grew up going to Stevenson Junior High great times. So sad to see parts of East LA to be gentrified.
I was born there in May of 1985! Wish I could visit.
Hello, I was born at Santa Marta in Sept. 1970 and since I was a breach baby, my Mom told me that the Nuns surrounded the bed and started praying. Sorry to hear it’s gone.
